Is It Possible to Overdose on Vitamins?

Too much of a good thing can’t hurt, right?

Wrong.

In the pursuit of ultimate health many people ingest extreme amounts of vitamins daily – taking multivitamins, upwards of 10 specific vitamins, and purposefully ingesting foods with high amounts of vitamins they are seeking. The lure and appeal of vitamins is high these days – with many utilizing the nutrient compounds in place of medication or as a quick fix for beauty ailments. While vitamins’ popularity is not unfounded, a word of caution is advised – it is possible to overload and overdose on vitamins and the result can be catastrophic.

Most vitamins and minerals are water soluble (any excess is simply flushed out of the body as waste), but some are fat-soluble (any excess is stored in the body). Fat soluble vitamins, such as vitamins A, D, E, and K are necessary for bodily health, but can be deadly if overdosed. Furthermore, some water soluble vitamins, such as B6, also have adverse affects on the body when taken in high quantities.

Still not convinced that “healthy” vitamins can be so bad for you? Check out the following data:

  • Overdosing on vitamin A can lead to headaches, blurry vision, hair loss, liver damage, osteoporosis acceleration, and birth defects.
  • Gorging on vitamin D causes calcium deposit build up in the body which adversely affects muscle function (including the heart).
  • A vitamin E overload increases the chances of heart attack, fatigue, tumors in the breast, and blood clots.
  • Too much vitamin K can cause rashes and gastrointestinal irritation.
  • An overdose of vitamin B6 can lead to difficulty walking and numbness in the mouth and hands.
  • Overloading on vitamin C causes diarrhea and stomachache.
  • A high dosage of vitamin B3 (often prescribed to lower cholesterol) can increase chances of jaundice and liver damage.

A healthy dose of vitamins and minerals is fundamental for maintaining a healthy system. It is imperative, however, to read dosage labels and to follow them closely.
